As a world leading producer of potassium and sodium permanganate, Carus is dedicated to safety and handling of its products for both employees and potential users. Carus Corporation is a member of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) and participates in the ACC’s Responsible Care® initiative. There are several important principles that form the program, but none more important than safety. We strive to maintain the safety of our workplace staff and to offer advice for the safety of our customers.
Regarding safety and handling of permanganate, the most important communication pieces we offer are Safety Data Sheets (SDS), formerly known as a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). The main change from MSDS to SDS includes the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for Hazard Communication. Required in this change, for example, is a new 16-section format – although Carus has been using a 16-section MSDS for some time. For more information on what each section includes, check out the OSHA Hazard Communication Safety Data Sheets Quick Card.
The updated SDS now includes new red, black, and white pictograms. Our permanganate products are manufactured, packaged and delivered in two forms: crystalline solids (potassium permanganate) and concentrated liquids (sodium permanganate). Below are the new Health Hazard Pictograms that are required for crystalline CAIROX® potassium permanganate. The OSHA Hazard Communication Standard Pictogram Quick Card can help serve as a reminder as to what each pictogram means.
The health and safety categories are also new and based on the latest research data. Remember that when potassium permanganate is stored and handled properly, it is stable and easy to use. It is an oxidizer and if mixed with incompatible materials, it will generate heat. However, when permanganate is dissolved in water as a dilute solution, acute hazards are reduced or eliminated.

The new Health Hazard Pictograms required for CARUSOL® liquid permanganate are below.
A new Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is also available for permanganate liquids. As with dry permanganate, when concentrated liquids are stored and handled properly, they are stable and easy to use. There are no vapors that are released from permanganate solutions.

For more in-depth information on safety and handling of permanganate, please register for our upcoming safety webinar. In addition to GHS requirements, handling, storage, clean-up, neutralization, and disposal are a few additional topics that will be covered. We also have the following documents available regarding our CAIROX and CARUSOL products safety and handling.
